WIDESPREAD concern regarding Ryan Garcia making weight was validated late Friday morning when the troubled contender came in 3.2 pounds too heavy for his 140-pound title fight against Devin Haney.
Garcia officially weighed 143.2 pounds behind closed doors when he stepped on the New York State Athletic Commission’s scale. Haney met his contractual obligation by making weight for their DAZN Pay-Per-View main event.
It was not clear at the time this story was posted whether Garcia would even attempt to lose so much weight within the one hour permitted by the NYSAC for him to return to the scale at the super lightweight limit of 140 pounds or lower. Regardless, Garcia is expected to pay fines to the NYSAC and Haney and will move forward with their 12-round main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), of Henderson, Nevada, and Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), of Victorville, California, are scheduled to participate in a ceremonial weigh-in at Barclays Center at 7pm BST, 2 p.m. ET.
At 5.44pm Golden Boy Promotions issued the following statement:
“Ryan has weighed-in over his contractual weight. He will honour the handshake make at the final press conference yesterday. We have a fight.”
