When and why you started boxing:

I started boxing because I got kicked off my Track and Cross Country team at University for a prank that I did. I enjoyed college life for a year and, in that time, I met a professional boxer. So, I thought I wanted to try boxing because I have done every other sport in the book. So, I went to the gym where he trained, and the coach there said I had a lot of potential. And the rest is history.

Favourite all-time fighter:

Sugar Ray Robinson. I just like his overall skill.

Sugar Ray Robinson

Best fight you’ve seen:

It was a fight in Argentina, a qualifier for the 2016 Olympics. My teammate Jonathan Esquivel was losing with around 10 seconds of the last round left, and then he knocked his opponent clean out.

Personal career highlight:

When I won the Olympic Trials for the 2016 Olympic Games. I was fighting my ultimate rival, Marlen Esparza, who had beaten me five times in a row leading up to that tournament. But I finally beat her when it mattered the most.

Toughest opponent:

Myself, because that’s the only person who can beat me.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

My best attribute is that no matter who is in front of me, I can adjust very quickly to their style. My worst is that sometimes I get a little excited, and I will rise up on my combinations. I am still working on fixing that.

Training tip:

Enjoy every moment of training. Focus on what you are doing and realise how it will help you. Even though it is hard and you are tired, live in the moment.

Favourite meal/restaurant:

I just love food. But I could eat the hell out of croissants.

Best friends in boxing:

Mikaela Mayer and Claressa Shields.

Which other athlete would you like to be:

I am going to say, Steve Prefontaine, the American long-distance runner because he is my favourite athlete.

Last film/TV show you saw:

I have just watched Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room with my dad, which is about the fall of the Enron Corporation.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
Margot Robbie, who was in the recent Barbie film that I just watched.

Have you ever been starstruck:
Rudy Tomjanovich, who was the coach of the Houston Rockets in the 90s when they were winning everything. I didn’t think I would ever get to meet him.

Last time you cried:

When I was watching one of the episodes of 13 Reasons Why, an American TV series.

Best advice received:

When you do something for someone, don’t expect anything in return.

Something not many people know about you:

In middle school, I was severely suffering from Anorexia so badly that my parents thought I was going to die. I was sent to an inpatient centre where I was clinically diagnosed with OCD.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years:

Hopefully, on a nice big boat. Either somewhere in the Caribbean or in Florida. I don’t know what I am going to do after boxing, but all I know is I want to be on a boat.

What one thing would you change in boxing:

It’s all about the eyeballs now. It’s not about the talent anymore. I wish promoters would focus more on talent and not just social media followers, build someone up, and give those fighters more of a chance.
